RUSSIAN BOTS 1, FACEBOOK 0: Facebook CANCELLING TRENDING FEATURE as Soon as Next Week; Schiff and Feinstein Wrote Facebook in January About Pesky Russian Bots

Why Is Facebook Removing Trending Feature From Its Platform?

In exchange for Trending, Facebook is preparing “something better.” Hardiman said that they are currently exploring new ways to help Facebook users stay informed about timely, breaking news that’s trustworthy and from quality sources.

“…three new features that could be introduced as replacements of the Trending feature. They are Breaking News Label, Today In and News Video in Watch.”

Facebook users, prepare to say goodbye to the social network’s Trending feature. Mark Zuckerberg’s company has announced that it is removing the feature as soon as next week.

Facebook’s Head of News Products Alex Hardiman announced Friday that they are removing Trending soon. She did not give a specific date, but she explained the reason behind the move.

“We’re removing Trending soon to make way for future news experiences on Facebook,” Hardiman said in a blog post. “We introduced Trending in 2014 as a way to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community. However, it was only available in five countries and accounted or less than 1.5 [percent] of clicks to news publishers on average.”

Hardiman admitted that Trending is a feature that not too many people are using in the places where it is made available. “From research we found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful,” she said. “We will remove Trending from Facebook next week and we will also remove products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API.”

In exchange for Trending, Facebook is preparing something better. Hardiman said that they are currently exploring new ways to help Facebook users stay informed about timely, breaking news that’s trustworthy and from quality sources. She also acknowledged that more and more people prefer to check out the news on mobile devices and through news video format.

Hardiman then shared that Facebook is testing out three new features that could be introduced as replacements of the Trending feature. They are Breaking News Label, Today In and News Video in Watch.

Breaking News Label, as what its name suggests, will let publishers put a “breaking news” indicator on their posts in the News Feed. Facebook is currently testing this feature, along with breaking news notifications, with 80 publishers across North America, Australia, South America, Europe and India.

Today In is a section that Facebook is also working on at the moment. This section is dedicated to connect people to the latest breaking and important news that matter to them. This means the news that are presented in this section will only be from local publishers in the city where the user is staying. The section also presents updates from local organizations and announcements made by local officials.

The last but not the least feature is News Video in Watch. This is a dedicated section on Facebook Watch where people can view live coverage, daily news briefings and weekly deep dives that are exclusive to Facebook’s video on demand service.

“People tell us they want to stay informed about what is happening around them. We are committed to ensuring the news that people see on Facebook is high quality, and we’re investing in ways to better draw attention to breaking news when it matters most,” Hardiman finally said.

Top Dems Call on Twitter, Facebook to Investigate Russian Bot campaign

Top Dems call on Twitter, Facebook to investigate Russian bot campaign

Top-ranking Democrats in the House and the Senate are calling on Twitter and Facebook to launch investigations of potential Russian-linked accounts pushing for the release of a controversial congressional memo.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff(Calif.), and the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerbergand Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey asking that they “provide a public report to Congress and the American public by January 26” on the matter.

Facebook and Twitter confirmed receipt of the letter.

“Twitter is committed to addressing malicious activity on our platform, and we take any assertions of such activity very seriously. We look forward to working closely with Senator Feinstein and Congressman Schiff to address their questions,” a Twitter spokesperson said.

The memo in question was drafted by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and is believed by some Republicans to show political bias in the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) probe of potential links between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Schiff and Feinstein in their letter cited data by the German Marshall Fund’s Alliance for Securing Democracy, which found that Russian bots on Twitter were advocating for legislators to make the memo public.

A source familiar with Twitter’s analytics said “the hashtags appear to be organically trending,” and seem to not be the result of a Russian led influence campaign.

The senators expressed concern that attempts by Russian actors to influence the release of the memo “are intended to influence congressional action and undermine Special Counsel [Robert] Mueller’s investigation,” of the possible Trump campaign ties to Russia.

“It is critically important that the Special Counsel’s investigation be allowed to proceed without interference from inside or outside the United States,” the California lawmakers wrote. “That is why we seek your assistance in our efforts to counter Russia’s continuing efforts to manipulate public opinion and undermine American democracy and the rule of law.”

Some GOP lawmakers have called for the House Intelligence Committee to release the memo, claiming it reveals important information about the investigation and highlights surveillance abuses. Other lawmakers, like Schiff, have characterized it as a set of “distorted talking points” which are “completely misleading.”

On Friday, Hamilton 68, a website affiliated with the German Marshall Fund’s Alliance for Securing Democracy that tracks accounts that it believes to be linked to the Kremlin, found that such accounts were aggressively pushing for the memo’s release.

#ReleaseTheMemo was overwhelmingly the top hashtag tweeted from those accounts for multiple days last week, and the top tweeted link among those Twitter accounts was to a WikiLeaks page soliciting the document from anyone who has access to it.

“If these reports are accurate, we are witnessing an ongoing attack by the Russian government through Kremlin-linked social media actors directly acting to intervene and influence our democratic process,” Schiff and Feinstein wrote to Twitter and Facebook.

“This should be disconcerting to all Americans, but especially your companies as, once again, it appears the vast majority of their efforts are concentrated on your platforms.”

Facebook Replaces User-Generated “Trending News” With “Breaking News” From 80 Undisclosed Publications

Facebook is replacing its user-generated “trending news” feature with a “breaking news” section – comprised of 80 publications which they will feed to users.

In other words, Facebook will have complete control over narratives and topics which go against their internal corporate culture.

Facebook’s Trending News section has been the subject of intense scrutiny since the 2016 election after it was revealed that the editors in charge of the feature were repeatedly discriminating against conservative articles, while promoting progressive content. Their clear bias resulted in the threat of an investigation from the Senate commerce committee.

The new changes were explained in a Friday announcement:

  • Breaking News Label: A test we’re running with 80 publishers across North America, South America, Europe, India and Australia lets publishers put a “breaking news” indicator on their posts in News Feed. We’re also testing breaking news notifications.
  • Today In: We’re testing a dedicated section on Facebook called Today In that connects people to the latest breaking and important news from local publishers in their city, as well as updates from local officials and organizations.
  • News Video in Watch: We will soon have a dedicated section on Facebook Watch in the US where people can view live coverage, daily news briefings and weekly deep dives that are exclusive to Watch.

Facebook just announced they’re removing trending topics and replacing it with news from publishers in your city, updates from local officials and organizations. This isn’t an attempt to improve Facebook, it’s an attempt to be the the thought police.

Robby Starbuck

The obvious takeaway here is that Facebook wants to control the conversation. Who believes that the news orgs they choose will be fair and balanced? No one. Instead of seeing what is naturally igniting dialogue around issues you’re going to get Facebook approved propaganda.

Robby Starbuck

To recap – you’re going from user controlled trends that honestly represent the conversation, views and dialogue of users to Facebook approved outlets TELLING you what you need to hear. They will only share the most sanitized positions that suit their biases.

Robby Starbuck

Make no mistake: This is entirely driven by political aims. Facebook is VERY unhappy with how their platform drove conversation during the 2016 election. This is their attempt to slow the spread of information and political views they don’t like on their platform.

Robby Starbuck

Who’s curating the approved local publishers, news orgs, local officials and organizations? Certainly not a politically neutral or unbiased team and certainly not representative of our country. This is a propaganda op to control and do the work of their preferred political party.

While the Washington Post, Recode, The Verge, and Vox have confirmed they’re among the 80 “breaking news” publications, no other publishers names have been revealed.

We imagine Shareblue, Media Matters, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti Defamation League are all included.
